Push-Type Retainers
Push-type retainers, often called push pin clips or plastic rivets, hold bumper covers, fender liners, air dams, engine splash shields and radiator shrouds to the body. The retainer has a body with split legs and a center pin. Pushing the pin in spreads the legs behind the panel and locks the part in place. Drive-pin and closed-end styles are available for different panels.
This category includes individual retainers sized by hole diameter, head or flange diameter and stem length, along with application-specific parts such as stone shield, tail light and fascia retainers. Auveco, Disco Automotive Hardware and K-Tool International shop packs cover common GM, Ford, Chrysler and import applications.
To remove a push-type retainer without breaking the panel, lift the center pin first with a trim tool or panel clip pliers, then pull the body out. Most retainers are not designed to be reused, so replace any that are cracked or have lost their grip.
