What are cutoff wheels used for?

Cutoff wheels are abrasive tools used for cutting metal, concrete, tile, and other hard materials. They are typically mounted on angle grinders, chop saws, or die grinders. Different types of cutoff wheels are designed for specific materials and applications, so selecting the right wheel is crucial for safety and efficiency.

What should I consider when choosing a cutoff wheel?

When selecting a cutoff wheel, consider the material you'll be cutting, the size and arbor hole of your tool, and the desired cutting speed and finish. Abrasive type, wheel diameter, and thickness all impact performance. For example, aluminum oxide wheels are good for general purpose cutting, while silicon carbide wheels are better for non-ferrous metals and masonry.

Do you sell 14-inch abrasive cutoff wheels?

Yes, we offer a variety of 14-inch abrasive cutoff wheels suitable for chop saws and other large cutting tools. These wheels are commonly used for cutting metal stock, pipes, and structural steel. Brands like Shark and FORNEY INDUSTRIES offer several options in this size.

What types of cutoff wheels do you carry?

ToolSource carries a wide range of cutoff wheels, including abrasive cutoff wheels, diamond cutoff wheels, and thin cutting wheels. We stock wheels made from various materials like aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, and ceramic. With over 350 cutoff wheels available, you can find the right wheel for your specific needs.

Which brands of cutoff wheels do you offer?

We offer cutoff wheels from leading brands in the industry, including Shark, FORNEY INDUSTRIES, Milwaukee Electric Tools, DeWALT, Norton Company, Makita, 3M Automotive, and Irwin. Each brand offers a variety of wheels designed for different applications and performance levels. Choosing a reputable brand can ensure quality and longevity.

What is the difference between a thin cutoff wheel and a standard cutoff wheel?

Thin cutoff wheels are designed for faster, cleaner cuts with minimal material loss. They are typically used for precision cutting and applications where a narrow kerf is required. Standard cutoff wheels are generally thicker and more durable, suitable for heavier-duty cutting tasks.

How do I ensure safety when using cutoff wheels?

Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, and a face shield when using cutoff wheels. Ensure the wheel is properly mounted and rated for the tool's RPM. Avoid applying excessive pressure and inspect the wheel for damage before each use. Following manufacturer's instructions is also crucial for safe operation.

What are some common applications for diamond cutoff wheels?

Diamond cutoff wheels are specifically designed for cutting very hard and abrasive materials like concrete, tile, stone, and masonry. They offer a longer lifespan and cleaner cuts compared to abrasive wheels when working with these materials. They are commonly used in construction, renovation, and landscaping projects.
