Metric Measuring Tools

Metric measuring tools are essential for any automotive mechanic, as they allow you to accurately measure the dimensions of parts and components. There are a variety of different metric measuring tools available, each of which is designed for a specific purpose.

  • Rulers are the most basic type of metric measuring tool. They are typically made of metal or plastic and have a scale marked in millimeters. Rulers can be used to measure the length, width, and height of objects.
  • Micrometers are used to measure very small distances. They consist of a coiled spring that is attached to a scale. When the micrometer is closed, the spring is under tension. When the micrometer is opened, the spring relaxes and the scale moves. The distance between the two marks on the scale indicates the size of the object being measured.
  • Dial calipers are another type of precision measuring tool. They consist of a movable jaw that slides along a fixed jaw. The distance between the two jaws is indicated on a dial. Dial calipers can be used to measure the outside diameter, inside diameter, and depth of objects.
  • Vernier calipers are similar to dial calipers, but they use a vernier scale to provide greater accuracy. The vernier scale is a secondary scale that is superimposed on the main scale. The difference between the two scales indicates the size of the object being measured.

In addition to these basic tools, there are a number of other metric measuring tools available, such as bore gauges, depth gauges, and angle gauges. Each of these tools is designed for a specific purpose and can help you to accurately measure the dimensions of parts and components.
