Cylinder Leak Detectors

Cylinder Leak Detectors

Cylinder leak detectors are used to identify and locate leaks in the combustion chambers of engines. They are typically used on gasoline engines, but can also be used on diesel engines.

Cylinder leak detectors work by injecting a small amount of compressed air into the combustion chamber while the engine is running. If there is a leak, the air will escape from the cylinder and be detected by the leak detector.

There are two main types of cylinder leak detectors:

  • Portable cylinder leak detectors are small and lightweight, making them easy to use on engines in the field. They are typically powered by batteries and have a built-in display that shows the results of the test.
  • Benchtop cylinder leak detectors are larger and more powerful than portable leak detectors. They are typically used in a shop setting and can be connected to a computer to record the results of the test.

Cylinder leak detectors are an essential tool for any automotive mechanic. They can help to identify and locate leaks quickly and easily, saving time and money.

Types of Cylinder Leak Detectors

  • Pressure decay leak detectors inject a small amount of compressed air into the combustion chamber and then measure the rate at which the pressure drops. The faster the pressure drops, the larger the leak.
  • Sound-activated leak detectors use a microphone to listen for the sound of air escaping from a leak. This type of leak detector is not as accurate as pressure decay leak detectors, but it is more affordable.
  • Electronic leak detectors use a combination of sensors to detect leaks. These sensors can detect leaks by measuring changes in pressure, temperature, or sound.
